About this tool

The Room Modes calculator computes every resonant frequency of a rectangular room — axial, tangential, and oblique. Axial modes occur between two parallel surfaces and carry the most energy, creating pronounced pressure peaks at the walls. Tangential modes involve four surfaces and are roughly 3 dB weaker. Oblique modes engage all six surfaces and are weaker still, but when their frequencies coincide with axial modes they can noticeably amplify the problem. Why it matters: modes are the primary cause of uneven bass in small and medium rooms. A standing wave creates pressure maxima at the walls and pressure minima (nulls) between them. Without understanding the frequency distribution of modes, you cannot choose the correct listening position, monitor placement, or bass trap strategy. Each mode is characterized by its frequency, type, and order — this data drives your treatment approach. How to read results: look for clusters — groups of modes within 5 Hz of each other. Such clusters produce a pronounced boom at that frequency. Gaps wider than 20 Hz indicate potential dips in the room's bass response. Common mistakes: ignoring tangential and oblique modes when they coincide with axial ones; trying to "remove" modes with an equalizer instead of acoustic treatment; measuring from exterior walls rather than interior surfaces. Next steps: verify mode distribution across third-octave bands using the Bonello criterion and evaluate room proportions with the Bolt Area diagram.
