About this tool
The chromatic tuner uses your device's microphone to detect pitch in real time. The tool displays the nearest note of the chromatic scale, deviation from the ideal frequency in cents, and the precise input frequency in hertz. All 12 notes of the chromatic scale are supported across a wide range from sub-bass to high overtones. A visual indicator helps you tune precisely — the green zone means you are within ±5 cents of the ideal frequency.
Why it matters: accurate tuning is a prerequisite for quality recording and confident live performance. Even a small deviation of 10 – 15 cents is audible, especially in chords and when playing with other instruments. A browser-based tuner requires no app installation and works on any device with a microphone — computer, tablet, or phone.
How to use: press the start button, allow microphone access, and play a note on your instrument. The tuner will automatically detect the pitch and show the deviation on the scale. For precise tuning, aim for zero deviation on the indicator. The standard reference pitch (A4) is set to 440 Hz but can be adjusted for alternative tuning systems — 432 Hz, 442 Hz, and others.
Common mistakes: tuning in a noisy environment where background sounds interfere with correct fundamental detection; tuning at too low a volume for the microphone to capture the fundamental frequency; ignoring pitch instability in the first few milliseconds of the attack — wait for the note to stabilize.
Next steps: after tuning your instrument, use the acoustic calculators to optimize the sound in your room.
