A Helmholtz resonator consists of an enclosed air cavity connected to the room through a narrow neck or perforated face panel. At the resonant frequency, air in the neck oscillates with maximum amplitude, converting sound energy into heat through viscous friction against the walls. Why it matters: low-frequency room modes in the 30–100 Hz range are extremely difficult to absorb with porous materials — panels thicker than half a meter would be required.
